Overview
This page describes a basic Jain Vidhi to be performed during the last rites of a Divangat Aaatma. This document was put together based on past experience and input from experts.
Items Needed
- One Gulab Jaal Bottle
- 100-gram rice ( Can be taken from home )
- Kumkum for tilak
- Chandan stick wooden
- Chandan ka Garland or Fresh Flower Garland or Fresh Flowers to be placed on to Divangat Aatma
- Four Sukha Nariyal ( Dry Gola, Whole Coconut, Sabut Gota Nariyal )
- Diya
- Ghee
- Vaat ( Lamp Wicks )
- One Photograph ( To be placed next to the Divangat Aatma )
- One small Garland for Photo.

If you have a viewing ceremony
- You can start the viewing ceremony with a chant of 3 Navkar Mantra.
- If you have an audio facility you can continue to play the navkar mantra in the background.
- Light the Diya in front of the photo during the viewing ceremony.
After Viewing :
- The Divangat Aatma will be brought for the cremation.
- The below sutras need to be performed before we do the final Cremation, which would take 15-20 min.
Before we start the Vidhi
- Please place the head of the Divangat Aatma on the east side.
- Please place the four dry coconuts in the four corners of the casket.
- Before the start of the prayers
- Put the Chandan Garland ( If Available ) on the Divangat Aatma
- In case you don’t have Chandan Garland, flowers Garland or flowers are OK. But ensure to remove the flower garland before the final cremation. Chandan garland need not be removed.
Start of the Vidhi ( Sutras )
(All a’s with nothing on top are pronounced as uh. All ä’s are pronounced like the a in saw)
- Shri Navkar Mantra
- Chatari Mangalam Sutra
- Aego Hum Nathi Mein Koi
- Aego Mein Sasha Aapa
- Sanjogamul Jivana
- Saat Lakh Pruthvikaay
- Adhar Papsthanak
- Sevamastu Sarvajagata
After The Vidhi ( Sutra )
- Kumkum ka Tilak and place rice on top of the tilak ( This can be done by all family members )
- Put Gulab Jaal in your hand and go all around the Divangat Aatma, starting from above the head and circle around the body.
- Place One or more Chandon Stick on the Chest ( Every Family member can put one )
- At last 8 navkar mantra all the members
- Break all the dry coconut and place them back into the 4 corners.
- Ensure to remove all the flowers before the final cremation.
- Post this, and the Divangat Aatmax will be taken for the final cremation.
Things to do before the person press the switch for the cremation process
- A close relative of the Divangat Aatma gets to start the switch
- Recite 3 Navkar Mantra
- Before the person presses or turns on the switch, they should hold their breath and then press the switch and let it go.
